Pests – Signs to look for!

As tenants, there are a lot of different things we need to keep on top of. Paying taxes, cutting grass, and daily vacuuming all come to mind, but there's another, far more stressful task that we can't shy away from defending our home from pests. If they're searching for food or protection, several various kinds of pests may make their way into our houses, any of them may do a lot of harm if left unchecked.

So, to keep you up to date on the various forms of pests that can threaten your house, and how to get rid of them, our team has put together a helpful checklist that you can come back to any time you want.

Ants

Ants are tiny industrial pests. The reasoning why the ants sneak into your house is because they're searching for food and shelter. Garden ants and carpenter ants are some of the most common forms. While common black ants are not harmful, they are notorious for their invasive nature. They're going to come to your kitchen hungry for sugary sweet food. On the other hand, carpenter ants are something of a threat because they kill construction structures made of wood. This can affect the integrity of your house.

There are some indications to be seen that you are infested with ants at home.

  • Having ants in your kitchen or in any environment where food is processed or cooked is an indication of possible infestation.

  • The appearance of a trail of ants walking through the garden to your house indicates that these insects are looking for fruit or rotting wood, depending on the type.

  • Small piles of soil on your grass as ants build their nests on the grass.

  • The sounds of insect movement on the walls or beneath the floors at night.

  • Listening to a hollow echo as you touch the walls can be a warning that you still have an issue with carpenter ants or termites.

  • Wood shaving dust piles are other signs of carpenter ants as they dig tunnels into the house's carpentry. These ants don't consume wood; they create spaces to build a nest.

  • Damp fields are attracting ants. You're likely to find stray ants in damp places like the toilet or kitchen when the house is infested.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches roam and eat at night. They live in areas that are humid, dim, and thrive behind sinks, refrigerators, or stoves. There are so many cockroaches that they're becoming a common concern. To decide whether you have these insects on your farm, look for the following signals.

  • You'll see black, pepper-like drops on the floors or the surfaces as cockroaches enter your house. The quantity of these drops is a good predictor of length and level of infestation at your house.

  • Oval-shaped egg cases can be seen in concealed areas and under furniture.

  • A heavy, musty, or oily smell in the house, especially in the kitchen, is another indication of a cockroach infestation.

  • You will see cockroaches hide or running on walls, floors, or kitchen cupboards as you open them.

  • Dead cockroaches can be seen as you vacuum the floor, or when you brush the bookshelf and scrub the furniture. Don't confuse this as a symbol of the end of the infestation, because mortality is part of their normal life cycle.

  • At night, you can see them flying around when you switch the lights on while they're searching for food.

  • It is important to be aware of what triggers a reaction to cockroaches, since this can be a severe issue, particularly in children.

Rodents

Although there are variations between rats and mice, rats are animals with identical traits and evidence of mice outbreak. They're busy at night. If you note the following symptoms, your household may be infested with rats.

  • The appearance of long, dark brown, bullet-shaped droplets means that there are probably rats in your house.

  • Any rat types are agile climbers. You're likely to hear scraping sounds in the walls and beneath floorboards at night.

  • You may note ripped materials such as cardboard, loft padding, or fabrics they use to build their nests.

  • The rats leave their footprints and tail prints, particularly in places that are dusty and little-visited at the entrance and exit route to their nests.

  • Like mice, rats leave traces of fat in areas they sometimes move around. They use these paths as they leave or reach their nests due to poor eyesight. These dark marks may be seen as an indicator of the infestation of rats. However, the marks do not signify whether or not the infestation is ongoing and the marks may last for a long time.

  • Rats gnaw on cardboard and wood to trim their teeth.

  • You can have a rodent invasion as you see ripped food packets and broken food cans.

  • If you have rats living in your house, you can find a pungent scent of urine in the air.

  • Signs of rodents can be ignored in the outbuildings. It is necessary to make sure that rats are repulsed from sheds and the like.

Bedbugs

A very good way to assess whether you have bed bugs is to add very sticky double-sided or carpet tape on both sides of the bed frame, trapping them, or also as a temporary solution to help with immediate biting as the occupant sleeps.

  • Black spots deeply bundled on mattresses and bedding are symptoms of bed bug feces.

  • You're going to get bitten! The first sign of a growing infestation is that you are already bitten.

  • The resulting discomfort of the anti-coagulant chemical around the bite site can be serious, especially in people with smooth, sensitive skin. Scratching is impossible to avoid, but this may induce bite area inflammation. If this is a possible concern, you can contact your doctor or pharmacist in your area to procure sufficient medicine.

  • The sting of this bug can be very painful. If left to multiply unchecked, bed bug numbers could become such that the host(s) could become anemic from blood loss, although this is uncommon.

Fly

Flies prefer to get into the house via open windows and doors as they follow the smell of food. Here, we'll look at some of the indications of a fly infestation.

  • The appearance of a black spot cluster is a sign of a fly infestation. They leave a pile of excrement on the wall, window sills, bins, or sink drains. Other black spots could be seen on high shelves and the top of the refrigerators. The appearance of a few dead flies spread around your house signals an invasion.

  • You're likely to see maggots or fly larvae near cracked drain pipes, or composite dumps, so they prefer moist spots. The females lay eggs in dark, damp areas like garbage and discarded food as they enter your home. So you're going to be watching out for creeping larvae in your bins.
